Tencent has begun marketing a bond offering that could raise roughly $5 billion, as the Chinese technology giant looks to fund an accelerating wave of spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and computing capacity.

The offering spans both dollar-denominated and offshore yuan-denominated notes. The dollar tranches include 10-year and 20-year bonds, with initial price guidance set at around 115 and 140 basis points over comparable US Treasuries, respectively. The yuan tranches include 10-year and 30-year notes, guided at roughly 2.9% and 3.5%.

Tencent has told fixed-income investors that the proceeds will go primarily toward AI-related capital expenditures, as the company races to build out the computing infrastructure needed to support its artificial intelligence ambitions across its gaming, social media and cloud businesses.

It is Tencent's second major bond offering this year. In June, the company raised nearly $4.7 billion in a similar sale, its largest debt offering since 2020, with proceeds directed partly toward refinancing and AI product development. The scale of spending behind this latest raise is notable: Tencent's capital expenditures on AI projects and computing surged 176% year-over-year in the quarter ended June, reaching 52.8 billion yuan, or roughly $7.9 billion.

The offering adds Tencent to a growing list of major technology companies turning to debt markets to finance AI buildouts, as capital expenditure requirements for data centers, chips and computing infrastructure continue to outpace what many firms generate in free cash flow, even amid strong underlying earnings.
